The year 2023 has brought a number of changes for consumers. On January 1st, for example, the Harz IV system was replaced by citizen income. In addition, the gas and electricity price brake should take effect from March and relieve the burden on citizens. A subsidy is also planned for heating oil and pellet customers during the energy crisis. Pellet heating: Funding is subject to conditions – consumers need to know that
With the basic subsidy of also ten percent, consumers get a total of 20 percent state subsidy for a pellet heating system. If you don’t have an old gas or oil heating system, you only get the ten percent basic subsidy. But this is also subject to several conditions. If you don’t meet these or don’t fully meet them, you will get nothing in case of doubt. In contrast to the promotion of a heat pump, one of the requirements for pellets particularly strict. - The heating must be on the list of eligible installations
- The system must be combined with a solar system or hot water heat pump
- A specialist company must confirm certain minimum standards
The second point in the list is primarily of great importance. A solar system alone can cost up to 10,000 euros or more, depending on its size and output. The costs for a new heat pump are also considerable – depending on the situation model the price is 15,000 for an air and up to 30,000 euros for a geothermal heat pump. “Politics has concentrated too much on the promotion of heat pumps,” criticizes Martin Bentele – Managing Director of the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV) – in an interview with our editors.

Funding for pellet heating unfair: “legislators provoke social injustice”

Bentele: “It makes people buy the cheapest.” Expensive boilers and systems and additionally one solar system – many simply cannot afford it. Therefore, state support is also an important component for pellets. “A policy based solely on electricity will not work in the long term,” says Bentele. It is all the more important to keep an eye on all heating technologies in the heat transition – including pellets and pellet heating. The expert has another tip for consumers.

The advantage here: A solar system or heat pump is not mandatory.

The conclusion to the promotion of pellets and a new pellet heating system: The government grants are not that easy to get. On the one hand, consumers have to meet various requirements. In particular, the additionally required solar system or heat pump should be mentioned here. On the other hand, there are subsidies from various pots for pellet heating. The problem here: Not everyone can do everything grants claim. For the KfW funding, for example, the entire building has to be renovated.
Nevertheless, before making a purchase decision, you should consider all funding opportunities for a pellet heating look closely.
