Exposure to phthalates – chemicals found in a variety of products including soaps, shampoos and nail polishes – may trigger type 2 diabetes, a new study has found.

Published recently in Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and quoted byEurek Alert!the study states that the substance is also associated with a reduction in fertilityin addition to other endocrine disorders.

In the research in question it was concluded that phthalates can contribute to a higher incidence of diabetes, especially in women, in addition to increasing the risk of various metabolic diseases.

“It is important that we now address chemicals that are endocrine disruptors, as they are harmful to human health,” said the researchers responsible for the study.

During the project, data from 1,308 women were analyzed over six years. About 5% developed diabetes during the period. Through research, the group concluded that women exposed to high levels of phthalates had a higher probability 30 to 63% more likely to develop diabetes.

“Our research is a step in the right direction to better understand the effect of phthalates on metabolic disease, but further investigation is needed,” the team said.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not properly use the insulin it produces. The cause is directly related to overweight, sedentary lifestylehigh triglycerides, hypertension, in addition to inadequate eating habits.
