Substitute for Monreal stands apart from Plan B: it was unconstitutional, regressive and threatened democracy

MEXICO CITY (apro).- Just yesterday, Alejandro Rojas Díaz Durán, assumed the seat that Ricardo Monreal left vacant last Friday. Today, the morenista has reneged on “Plan B” of the Electoral Reform, in the context of his party’s condemnation of the decision of the Supreme Court for invalidating said reform.

He did it bluntly:

“From the beginning, Plan B on the INE was unconstitutional and represented a political regression that threatened the democratic regime of Mexico,” said the new legislator.

The allusion is about the package of reforms promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his legislative benches, after they could not carry out a constitutional reform (Plan A). These reforms were invalidated today by the Court, a fact that today served as support to reiterate the Morena-PT-PVEM coalition and, at the same time, point to the Judiciary as part of the opposition, “the conservatives.”

Contrary to the partisan position and President López Obrador himself, the statements of Rojas Diaz Durán went further:

After the aforementioned considerations on Plan B, Monreal’s substitute announced that he will present a constitutional reform initiative with the aim of strengthening and protecting the autonomy of the INE.

“In this way, we will seek to nullify the temptation of any government to co-opt or subdue it in the future.”

He continued with an argument that used to be poured from Lorenzo Córdova’s INE:

“The guarantee of the country’s democratic governance rests on a reliable arbitrator, like this particular INE, which has recognized all of our electoral victories. The more citizen and zero partisan the INE is, the better it will be”.

Finally, he announced, contradicting his party’s unwillingness to hold forums and have citizen participation, that he will convene citizens to listen to them and work together on the initiative.

As will be remembered, the approval of Plan B had the public position and vote against Ricardo Monreal, who, being coordinator of the bench, questioned the constitutionality of the changes in the electoral order.
