Because of the Islamic Sugar Festival, Muslim students can only write the Abitur exams, which have been postponed to this Friday, in May. “Anyone who does not want to take part in the exams because of the festival can do so after prior consultation with the school management on May 9th,” said NRW School Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) on Wednesday. The ministry wrote that nothing stands in the way of the approval of special leave for teachers of the Muslim faith, provided that the Abitur examinations are guaranteed.

There had previously been massive criticism of Feller because of the termination. The Abitur exams in several subjects should have taken place on Wednesday – but due to technical problems, the schools could not download the tasks. The ministry then postponed the exams to this Friday – on this day, however, Muslims celebrate the sugar festival, which is important in Islam. The state student representation had criticized that the alternative date was also a “disaster”. (dpa)
