NEW YORK — The popular show Summer Streets of New York City, in which several miles of streets are closed to pedestrians only, will expand to all five boroughs for five Saturdays in July and August, Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis announced Tuesday. Rodriguez.
Usually the program runs only on Manhattan streets, but with this expansion it doubles in size to include 20 miles of car-free streets for people to enjoy, walk, bike and more.
This year’s program will be the most ambitious version since it launched Summer Streets in 2008 and provides a continued focus on equity. More than 500,000 people walked, ran, biked or played on Summer Streets last year.
“Something special happens when we open our streets to New Yorkers, so this year we are more than doubling the size of the Summer Streets and offering 20 miles of car-free streets in all five boroughs,” said Mayor Adams. “This is a bold new vision for public space in New York City – a bold new way to empower residents, support local businesses, and create open space. All New Yorkers deserve access to free, safe, open space, and this administration is making it happen.”
