Since the launch of the PS5, the console has been sold out almost everywhere. You either buy them at crazy prices on Ebay or wait patiently until a sale starts again somewhere. In the meantime, Sony has announced that it expects the next-gen console (which is actually a current-gen console by now) to be available almost everywhere at normal prices and with short delivery times. Although the console has not been available in stores for a long time, Sony says it is a great success: At a company presentation, record numbers for the PS5 have now been announced and at the same time revealed that a surprisingly large number of PS5 owners previously had none owned PS4. Sony deduces from this that the new generation was also able to win new customers and loyal players.

So many PS5 owners didn’t have a PS4 before

According to Sony, “only” 70 percent of all PS5 owners have previously owned a PS4. The statement came during a company presentation presenting financial results for the third quarter of 2022, which ends in December for Sony.

be like that “Nearly 30 percent of PS5’s monthly active users (buy now €697.00 )Users who have never used a PS4. So that means that as more and more PS5s are sold, the number of new customers will also increase.”.

In a separate document, Sony describes in more detail what they mean by “monthly active users”. So these are “an estimated total number of unique accounts that have played games or used services on PlayStation Network during the last month or quarter”.

Nevertheless, be careful with the numbers!

Even if the numbers sound nice at first, you should pay attention to what exactly they say: Sony bases the numbers on “new” PS5 players who have never owned a Playstation before on individual accounts that have played a game have. But there is no talk of actual console sales.

So it could be that the 30 percent of new users also include those who simply registered a new account with the PS5 or saved a family member on the console. Sony also had a much more meaningful number to offer at the presentation: the total number of consoles sold.

It has increased significantly in the past quarter and has recorded the best result since the launch of the PS5. A total of 7.1 million units were sold, bringing the total number of consoles sold to 32 million. And the PSVR2 will also be released shortly, which should boost sales again.
