Suspect arrested in fatally shooting Hispanic man in New Haven

A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in New Haven, Connecticut, last April, authorities said.

Police provided an update on this violent incident, which occurred on April 1 on Winthrop Avenue, in which Marquis Darnell McNeil, 40, and Jonathan Garcia, 28, were killed. Police announced that Cadell Harris, 39 years, was charged with both murders and is due to appear in court this afternoon.

Investigators connected Harris to the alleged murder weapon and also cited DNA evidence that placed him at the scene.

The suspect was on probation for a weapons violation, according to police. Harris is also on the deadly offender registry.

Harris was previously arrested in 2010 for allegedly shooting at police after a fight at a New Haven nightclub, it was said.

At least one of the victims knew Harris personally, according to police.

Initially, police were alerted to a gunshot detector activation just before 8:00 a.m. on April 1, reporting multiple rounds of gunshots in the area of ​​Winthrop Avenue and Goffe Terrace, followed by multiple 911 calls about a shooting. .

Officers found two people in a parked vehicle with gunshot wounds, according to police.

The male driver, later identified as McNeil, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male passenger, later identified as Garcia, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died.

Detectives were searching the scene for evidence, including any video surveillance that might have captured the incident.

Authorities seized a weapon found at the location and later arrested a person of interest, who police say was on probation.
