All embassy staff and their families are now back in Sweden, confirmed Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) on Twitter during Tuesday morning. For the Swedish staff, usually stationed in Sudan, it has been a whirlwind couple of days.

– It has been very intense. We have had conflicts for a week, says Erik Vågberg, humanitarian advisor at Sida, who has been deployed in Sudan.

French military assistance

The evacuation plan was to first get from Sudan to Djibouti with the help of the French military, then they would be flown on to Europe. In Khartoum, Erik Vågberg did not come with the first group of colleagues who were evacuated. Instead, he was left alone at the airport.

– There were many thoughts that went through my head then, but I thought that this will probably go well, it will work out.

After a few hours of waiting, he came up with the next evacuation plan for Djibouti.

Hear Erik Vågberg talk about the evacuation and the situation in Sudan now in the clip.
