There have long been rumors that the Apple Watch Ultra will be equipped with a display based on micro-LED instead of OLED technology. However, there are now indications that, contrary to previous information, the change will not take place until 2025.

That reports that Apple Insider online magazine and refers to a report from the circles of contract manufacturers. In a short tweet from analyst Ross Young, it is now said that Apple is postponing the market launch of a MicroLED Apple Watch to the second half of 2025.

Previously, Ross had received information that assumed an earlier start. It is assumed that initially only the Apple Watch Ultra will be presented with a display based on micro-LEDs instead of OLED technology – this is simply for cost reasons.

Advantages over OLED technology

MicroLED technology is an improvement over OLED and offers higher pixel density on the small display. MicroLED also offers advantages over OLED, such as higher brightness and sharper images.

However, it is currently still completely unclear whether Apple will actually only introduce MicroLED technology in 2025. A lot can still change in the market before then. In any case, Apple is flexible in adapting the plans quickly, they say.

At the beginning of the year, Mark Gurman already gave an interesting message. He wrote back in January that Apple will be adding the new displays to the iPhone line after the Apple Watch launch, followed later by the iPad and Mac lines. This change is to take place over a period of ten years. So far, however, none of this has been set in stone. Back in 2020, rumors surfaced suggesting that Apple was working on introducing MicroLED display technology for the Apple Watch. At that time, the start was still assumed for 2023.
