Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.- Hunters are returning to Tamaulipas hunting ranches, despite the fact that in recent years they have been the scene of shootings and disappearances.

Armed with their shotguns and rifles, the hunters break attendance records, said Rolando Guevara González, secretary of Economic Development (SEDEM) of Nuevo Laredo.

He said that this season they added 2,802 permits, 10 percent more than the 2,548 registered last year, and it is expected that they will exceed 3,000 hunters, because this week Americans continued to arrive.

White-tailed deer abound in the region, especially in the 700 ranches of Nuevo Laredo and Nueva Ciudad Guerrero. “Last season we had record numbers in tags (Semarnat hunting permits),” Guevara said.

“We hope to exceed those numbers,” he added. “We know that there is confidence in Nuevo Laredo on the part of the hunters.”

The official hunting season for white-tailed deer and other animals began on November 11, and hunters from Texas, Nuevo León, Veracruz, Jalisco and other northern states have arrived in this border city.

The Secretary stressed that, apart from the pandemic, many hunters from the United States will travel this New Year’s holiday to take advantage of the best weather in Nuevo Laredo, since snowfall in their country prevents hunting.

“More than 3,000 hunters are expected to participate in the hunting season, which ends until February 26,” he said.

Carmen Lilia Canturosas, Mayor of Nuevo Laredo, said that the economic benefit generated by hunters, more than paying for permits, comes from the expenses they make at the ranches, in stores, restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and other businesses of their own. of this activity.

“Hunting tourism is very important in the economy, as we expect an income of around 15 million dollars,” he estimated.
