Overall, Samsung is taking an evolutionary path rather than reinventing the new S23 series. The biggest change concerns the processor as a drive. Unlike the predecessor, it no longer uses its own chipset, but the best that Qualcomm currently has to offer: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The chip is in all three variants of the S23.

This would eliminate a “weak point” in the previous model – this time the Samsung flagship really is one of the fastest Android phones. The predecessor chip Exynos 2200 was more on the level of a Snapdragon 888+ and was not quite as strong as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in terms of graphics performance. In terms of size and form factor, everything stays the same as the Galaxy S22 series. The Samsung Galaxy S23 is again very compact with a 6.1-inch display. The OLED screen offers excellent image quality and high luminosity with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels (Full HD+). The refresh rate is a maximum of 120 Hz. We don’t think more is necessary at the moment, as with Motorola with its 144 Hz.

The dimensions are 146.3 × 70.9 × 7.6 mm with a weight of 168 g. It is the most powerful Android smartphone in a handy format. The devices have gained some battery power – that’s a good thing, since the battery life was one of the biggest criticisms of the small Galaxy S22. The Galaxy S23 now offers a capacity of 3900 mAh.

The workmanship is first class again, the frame is made of aluminum and the back is made of glass. The display is better protected than ever – this is where the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 comes into play. According to Samsung, the display even survives a fall onto concrete from a height of almost 1 meter. The smartphones are also waterproof according to IP68. When it comes to software and security updates, Samsung is now the model boy in the Android world. There are security patches for five years, and the devices can look forward to four version upgrades – one day even Android 17.

There is one change in the storage equipment – ​​only the Galaxy S23 is available with 128 GB. The main memory is 8 GB. The largest memory variant is 256 GB. A 50-megapixel sensor is used as the main camera, as well as an ultra-wide-angle lens with 12 megapixels and a telephoto lens with 10 megapixels (triple optical zoom). All lenses have optical image stabilization (OIS), which according to Samsung has been significantly optimized again. The same applies to recordings in the dark.

We would have wished for more megapixels for the wide-angle, manufacturers like Oneplus had already done it in the past and achieved good results with it. On the other hand, the wide angle of the S22 series was anything but below average in terms of quality, despite the comparatively low resolution.

Anyone looking for a handy smartphone with top features will find a strong solution in the Samsung Galaxy S23. In addition, it is the only device in the series that is available for less than 1000 euros at the start of sales. Apart from the size, the processor and camera equipment is the same as the Galaxy S23. The battery, on the other hand, offers significantly more capacity with 4700 mAh.

However, the Galaxy S22+ is only available with a memory of 256 GB or 512 GB. This increases the RRP for the cheapest variant to 1119 euros. The Galaxy S23+ is the right choice for anyone who wants a large display and needs longer battery life. The detailed test will come at the end of next week.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra again offers a 6.8-inch curved-edge display and measures 163.4 × 78.1 × 8.9mm at 233g. This makes it the largest model in the series. The Galaxy S Pen stylus is integrated in the housing. The edge of the screen on the new Ultra model is less curved than on the previous year’s model and thus offers a little more surface area. It has the best display of the three devices, delivering a resolution of up to 3088×1440 pixels. Our test will follow on Monday.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra brings the biggest change next to the rapid CPU in the camera. Samsung is also using a lens with 200 megapixels for the first time, as Motorola and Xiaomi did last year. There are also two telephoto lenses with 10 megapixels for three and ten times optical zoom and an ultra-wide-angle lens with 12 megapixels. The front selfie camera has slimmed down compared to its predecessor and now only offers 12 megapixels.

Amazon offers a pre-order for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with 512 GB for 1399 euros instead of 1579 euros. Klarmobil currently only requires 1249 euros.

Samsung follows the path of evolution rather than revolution. At first glance, the three models are very similar to the previous trio. However, progress has been made on the details. The display is now particularly stable and a Qualcomm chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, finally ensures top performance. The Galaxy S23 is the “cheapest” model and one of the most compact Android smartphones you can buy. The ultra model with a top camera and display as well as an integrated stylus is pure high-end.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is the best choice for anyone looking for a compact smartphone but doesn’t want to compromise on performance and features. If you need a longer battery life and a larger display, it is better to use the Samsung Galaxy S23+. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra leaves almost nothing to be desired. The integrated pen works great, with two telephoto lenses it is perfect for hobby photographers. The Ultra model is just a bit clumsy and quite expensive.

Overall, the S23 series is even more expensive than the previous models – the cheapest device starts at just under 1000 euros. The top model Galaxy S23 Ultra with 1 TB and 12 GB RAM even costs 1819 euros – that is reminiscent of Apple.
