Terraria's success is a double-edged sword: it sells like hotcakes, but it prevents its creators from developing a new game

Terraria has been with us for more than 12 years, one of the Top rated titles on all of Steam. The Re-Logic project has reached levels of success rarely seen in the industry and the continuous support of the developer is such that the team is working on the patch 1.4.5 in collaboration with Dead Cells.

Good news for the players and their creators, but there is a detail to take into account. As collected in PC Gamer, the head of the company, Andrew Spinks, stated that “after twelve years, the game is still selling like hot cakes. There is so much demand that it is difficult for us to keep going.” Or what is the same, his own Terraria it’s becoming a stumbling block when it comes to focusing on new games.

“Really, version 1.3 was the first final planned update. But then we had all these great ideas, unfinished business, if you will,” said Ted Murphy, Re-Logic’s head of business strategy and marketing. That update came out in 2015So eight years have passed since that moment.

It was not the last key moment, since the Journey’s End patch in 2020 introduced an abundance of content and in 2022 Labor of Love appeared, another battery of novelties driven by the ideas proposed by the public. “We felt the need to give fans another update. We took a lot of suggestions and inspiration from those same fans during that update,” Murphy clarifies.

However, Re-Logic is clear that Terraria is at a point where it “feels very complete”, so sooner or later the time will come when they can start working on their next video game. “This would also be good for Re-Logic and the franchise, as it will allow the team to explore ideas that might not work as well in Terraria’s current iteration and technology,” Murphy says, noting that “when will the last Terraria update actually happen? I don’t even think we can say for sure.”
