It may not seem like it, but the Marvel Comics hero community doesn’t really like Spider-Man. Peter Parker is tragic and lonely, always feeling guilty for the deaths of people around him. Fortunately, over time he began to nurture a friendship that became a “bromance”: the Human Torch, from the Fantastic Four, became one of the only best friends that the Neighborhood Buddy has. And Marvel Studios has a golden chance to reproduce this in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU, its acronym in English).

  • Spider-Man goes through difficulties because of a rule imposed in 1963

“Why don’t heroes like Spider-Man?” would be your question. Well, Peter has developed a habit of pushing away the people he cares about, because there’s a history of loved ones dying around him. Also for this reason, he tends to be very careful with his secret identity, precisely to prevent his villains from threatening his acquaintances.0

Also, while jokes are useful for distracting villains and decreasing the Wall Climber’s anxiety during combat, they also make many teammates uncomfortable and irritated. Added to this, Peter Parker, unlike his alter-ego, is introverted and shy; and, when he wears his suit, he cannot act in a disciplined team, as his impulsiveness and sense of responsibility often clash with leadership such as Captain America.

Marvel even made a point of highlighting this when Peter was hospitalized, in a coma, and not even an Avenger went to visit him. Loneliness is part of the hero, and that’s part of the strength he has to carry a weight that no one else can. Indeed, Spider-Man: Never Go Home it also put him in a similar situation, precisely because that’s part of the character.

However, thanks to coincidences that have become recurring events over the years, Spider-Man has developed a strong friendship with the Human Torch, one that ranges from competitiveness to the “safe haven” of a friendly shoulder who understands what life is like for a man. Super hero.

Understand how this happened over the decades, and how the MCU would be preparing this “bromance” in theaters.

“Bromance” started like all the best friendships do

Initially, Spider-Man didn’t even like the Human Torch. The first meeting of the two took place in the first edition of the magazine solo do arachnídio, in Amazing Spider-Man #1from 1963. When trying to earn some money and get out of pindaíba by monetizing his powers, Peter sought out the Fantastic Four, but his plan did not work out very well, and, right away, Johnny Storm already turned his face to the Friend of the Neighborhood.

The rejection was overcome in Amazing Spider Man #3also from 1963. After being easily defeated by Doctor Octopus, and almost giving up on being a hero, a speech by Johnny Storm at the school where Peter studied inspired him to be resilient and return to don his costume to fight crime.

In the same year, in Strange Tales Annual #2, the relationship between the two gained some rivalry. Johnny, who is quite self-centered, was already jealous of Spider-Man’s exposure in the press, and when Peter was accused of a crime, he soon made advances on the boy. Afterwards, calmer, the Human Torch understood that the Wall Climber was framed and I help him prove his innocence. From then on, a more friendly conversation began between the two at the Statue of Liberty, a place that would become the official meeting point for future “bromance” moments.

Already from Amazing Spider-Man #130In 1974, the two began to spend a lot of time together, and the Human Torch even helped Peter build the Spidermobile and taught him how to drive. In Marvel Team-Up #1from 1977, the two joined forces to defeat the Sandman – detail that the villain escaped, but the “bromance” was already so consolidated that they didn’t even care and enjoyed Christmas together.

The relationship has evolved into that kind of help that only your best friend can give you. In a plot where Peter lived with the symbiote that created Venom, in Amazing Spider Man #258, 1984, Reed Richards helped remove the alien from his skin. But with that, Spider-Man was left without a costume, and in order to keep his identity a secret, he hid in the shadows. The Human Torch picked up on the concern and lent him an extra Fantastic Four outfit with a grocery bag for him to wear over his head — that’s what friendship is, you have to put up with the teasing; and this costume became so popular that it appeared in games.

“Bromance” consolidated and generated joint stories

The relationship between the two was so well accepted and combined so much that Marvel even released a miniseries with the two heroes acting together in 2005. Spider-Man finally revealed his identity to Johnny, who also opened his heart and said he envied the life of Peter for years; the arachnid also said what the Human Torch has and cannot have. This story consolidated the “bromance” once and for all.

When Johnny was presumed dead in Fantastic Four #587, Peter assured that he would be there for the Richards family, in a very touching farewell. Around this time, Spider-Man even joined the Fantastic Four’s Future Foundation in Fantastic Four #12011. When the Human Torch returned, the Wall Climber even tried to share an apartment with his friend, but Johnny’s habits showed that it’s better for everyone to stay in their corner to maintain respect.

The last two standout stories from this bromance were published in Amazing Spider-Man #3from 2015, when Peter was rich and bought the Baxter Building after the Fantastic Four dedicated themselves to rebuilding the Multiverse at the conclusion of secret wars; is at Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #42019.

Actor casting for Fantastic Four lets us dream of “bromance”

Well, as everyone knows, the Fantastic Four movie is about to go into production, and the actors would already be defined, since Marvel Studios can present them at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, in July. Big boss Kevin Feige is very into the comics, and is also very attentive to details like the “bromance.

not end of Spider-Man: Never Go Home, Peter rises to “classic Spider-Man” status, lonely in a low-rent New York apartment. It is not possible to know if the nucleus that kept him company in the trilogy will return for the next films, but everything indicates that the Wall Climber will interact with other characters from his life as a young adult in the comics.

And that’s where the Human Torch comes in, as the characters must interact in the next movies of the next phases. And the great hope, even if it is very little, comes from the rumors about the actor who can live Johnny Storm: Paul Mescal is the same age as Tom Holland, and he is also British. While “coincidences” don’t mean much, they can help the duo reproduce the chemistry the heroes have in the comics.

Let’s hope, because this “bromance” is a lot of fun and can yield great moments of comedy and drama on the big screen.
