Google is retrofitting a simple but often required function in Docs: In the future, the word processor can display non-printable characters if desired. This includes, for example, paragraph markers, page breaks, spaces or tab indentations. Users can use these to control the formatting of their document.

The function is a standard feature of word processors. The fact that Google Docs does not offer it has already caused complaints from users. So accumulated in the IssueTracker for several years, many comments calling for the display of non-printable characters. Previously, users resorted to extensions from third-party developers.

In the Feature Announcement Google doesn’t respond to the long wait. However, it’s available now for most users – although it may take up to 15 days for some users for the program to display the new feature. They also receive all licenses, i.e. private users as well as workspace customers.

At the same time, Google has revised its dictation function for Docs: With it, the software converts spoken language into text and can automatically add subtitles to presentations. The update, which will be distributed immediately, is intended to significantly reduce the error rate and the feature according to the announcement make it available for most web browsers.
