Initially only for Galaxy, Pixel and new BMW models
When the functions were launched for iOS, the BMW developers assured that these functions should also be implemented for Android. A corresponding update has now been announced, but this can probably be described as a first cautious step. Here, too, BMW relies on ultra-wideband technology (UWB) for transmission between the vehicle and smartphone or watch.
Now also for Android: Digital Key Plus from BMW
The update will only be available for a limited number of smartphones at launch – this was very similar in 2021 when Digital Key was introduced. BMW is concentrating on the implementation with Samsung and Google:
The following Android models support BMW Digital Key Plus:
- Samsung devices (Android 13.1 or newer):
- Galaxy S23+, S23 Ultra, S22+, S22 Ultra, S21+, S21 Ultra, Z Fold4, Z Fold3, Note20 Ultra
- Google devices (Android 13.1 or newer):
- Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6 Pro
But that’s not all with the basic requirements for use. At launch, Android compatibility is only available in vehicles with Digital Key Plus manufactured after November 2022. However, the developers assure that a future remote software upgrade will also bring the functions to vehicles manufactured before this date. Here, too, the support naturally depends on the installed hardware.
Implemented as usual
The new digital key can then also be set up under Android in the My BMW app. The functionality includes everything that is also known from the iPhone and the Apple Watch. The key can be shared with up to 5 people – now not only with iOS users but also with Android users, provided they have the right devices. When approaching, the vehicle is unlocked, when moving away, it is locked automatically. Other functions include activating the air conditioning or opening the trunk.
