The last Star Wars movie that was missing, The Rise of Skywalker, has now been released on SVOD. On Disney+, of course.

There was only one left. Since December 23, the saga is now complete on SVOD. The Rise of Skywalkerthe latest feature film by Star Wars to be released at the cinema, has arrived on Disney+ just before Christmas, three years after its theatrical release. The film thus joins the other eight of the main story, as well as the two spin-off films.

Released on December 18, 2019 in French cinemas, The Rise of Skywalker had to wait three years before appearing in the French catalog of the American platform’s subscription video-on-demand service. The reason ? At the time, the media timeline mechanism required a 36-month beat between theater and SVOD.

A reform of the media chronology that reduced the waiting time

The good news is that it is no longer necessary to wait so long to find a film shown in cinemas on streaming platforms. A media timeline reform reduced the wait time to 17 months (for Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video) or 15 months (for Netflix). The reform also tightened the other distribution windows, excluding SVOD. The problem is that only films released after the reform are entitled to this window. Those released before, like Star Wars IXmust wait 36 months.

The current version of the media timeline is subject to further development in the near future. A review clause exists for January 2023. Negotiations are currently underway between Disney+ and free television channels (TF1, France TV and M6) to bring their respective windows together, especially for big-budget films.

The changes envisaged should not radically upset the current structure of the media chronology, but rather settle the friction with the adjacent windows. For Star Warsit is in any case not at all a subject in the short and medium term: the next feature film, Rogue Squadron, is still a long way off. Its release won’t happen until 2024. Until then, the media timeline will be shorter.

The Star Wars sequel is mostly on SVOD

Currently, Lucasfilm and its parent company Disney are mostly focused on live-action and animated television series for the future of Star Wars on the screens. In particular, we expect Ahsoka, The Mandalorian season 3, Skeleton Crew and maybe, The Acolyte.

Now that all the movies Star Wars are on Disney+, it’s an opportunity to experience “machete viewing”, which is a revolution in the way of watching Star Wars in the correct order (the best thing is to test it on someone who has never seen the films).
