This coming year there will not only be elections at the three levels of government in the country. In addition, several unions will go to the polls for the renewal of authorities. One of them is the Association of State Workers (ATE) that represents workers and workers in the public sector at the national, provincial and municipal levels.

The province of Buenos Aires is one of the strongest sections within the trade union political map led at the national level by the historic leader from the city of La Plata, Hugo “Cachorro” Godoy, who would be replaced by another from La Plata, Oscar “Colo” De Isasi, current head of the provincial branch.

The possible replacement in the Buenos Aires section generated a tough fight for the succession. Who itches in point is the current head of sectional ATE Quilmes, Claudio Arevalo. Thus, the management of the union will no longer be in the hands of the Godoy sector after 20 years.

Beyond that, in the last months of 2022 other applicants for the union chair flourished. One led by the current Secretary of Organization, Leo Vazquez, who would carry out a continuity of De Isasi’s policy. The leader emerged from the General Directorate of Culture and Education is seen as the moderate wing in the dispute.

The space headed by the union secretary also appears Juan Alberto Murgia, with a reactionary profile with close ties to Trotskyism and the piquetero movement. Murgia comes from the municipality of Berisso and is accompanied by the trade union secretary Eliana Aguirre, with work beginnings at the Hospital de Niños de La Plata, the same employer of De Isasi where he worked as an orderly.

The sector commanded by the Murgia – Aguirre duo had noisy actions to show power before the adversaries on duty. As reported by the portal Guild World In addition to the fight for the power of the union, they seek to deliver a vision of an opposition union in the face of the well-oiled link that De Isasi managed to establish with the management of Axel Kicillof.

Within this framework, at the end of last November the sector convened an assembly in the Buenos Aires Senate. It was an action promoted by a minority sector and dissident to the leadership of the Internal Commission. The slogans pointed to the lieutenant governor Veronica Magario.

There was the presence of personnel from the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and members of the Provincial Board of Directors, although the participants did not exceed 40 people. It was the first show of power that the sector configured as the opposition to De Isasi tried to give.
