Switzerland is guest of honor at the Film Market during the Cannes Film Festival

CANNES.- Cannes decided to adopt artificial intelligence to strengthen the security service of the festival of cine this year, a good test bed two months before the opening of the Olympic Games from Paris.

With its plethora of stars, the crowd trying to get close to them and 4,500 accredited journalists, the festival (from May 14 to 25) will this year be monitored by 17 video surveillance cameras using Artificial Intelligence (AI), the town hall announced. coastal city.

This device has been installed on an experimental basis around the Festival Palace, the most guarded area, where the screenings take place and where, among others, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, who will receive an honorary Palme d’Or, Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, Catherine Deneuve or Demi Moore.

This technology will allow the municipal urban protection center (CPU) to detect events or behaviors considered suspicious or risky and help detect abandoned packages, the presence of weapons, people on the ground or any movement of crowds, details the city council.

These additional technological means of surveillance can be used in this edition thanks to: “the law relating to the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games”, according to the mayor of Cannes, David Lisnard.

These cameras will be associated with the densest video surveillance network in France, with 884 cameras, that is, “one for every 84 inhabitants, to make the security device more effective,” adds the mayor.

Other technical support will be the: “462 emergency call buttons, connected directly to the CPU.”

The city council decided to be a pioneer in this deployment. The buttons will be available: “in public spaces as well as in schools, daycare centers, public buildings and facilities, places of worship and businesses.”

Private security

Cannes has 200 municipal police and 66 surveillance agents, and the Ministry of the Interior told AFP that the device will be complemented with four mobile units, with 100 agents each, as in previous years.

“The level of security will not be degraded,” a representative of the regional prefecture assured AFP.

The Festival itself has hired 400 private security agents for control and surveillance within the Palace grounds.

But the festival also includes numerous private parties organized on the beaches or villas.

Thus, on Magnum Beach in front of the JW Marriott hotel, which has hosted parties for three Palme d’Or-winning films, “QR codes will be implemented, which means that all people will have to be accredited beforehand for security reasons,” he said. Frdric Henry, press officer for the brand, told AFP.

During the parties that will mark the nights of this 77th edition of the Festival, with artists such as Iggy Pop, Mika, Justice and Nicky Doll to make the stars dance, between 15 and 20 agents will be present to secure the place, as well as a canine trainer and a lifeguard.
