The Brazilian team presented the line of training clothing with the colors of Boca Juniors for their victory at La Bombonera in 2003

On April 24, 2003, the round of 16 series of the Libertadores Cups between Boca Juniors and the modest Paysandu Sport Club. The club from the city of Belém, in the north of Brazil, which currently plays in Serie C, played the prestigious international tournament for the first time and visited La Bombonera in the first leg.

The Brazilian team, which was undefeated in the tournament and finished as leader of Group 2 that it shared with Universidad Católica de Chile, Sporting Cristal from Peru and Cerro Porteño from Paraguay, gave the blow at the home of the xeneizes to win 1-0 with a bit from the striker Peter Iarley.

In the rematch, Paysandú suffered the reaction of the great Argentine team that he led Carlos Bianchi and that had as figures the Duck Abbondanzieri, Sebastián Battaglia, Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Carlos Tevez, among others. It was victory by 4-2 for Mouthwho would later be champion after forcefully defeating Saints.

Despite the elimination, the Brazilian club still proudly remembers the feat achieved in Argentine territory and presented its new line of t-shirts for training baptized “Bombonera”, which bear the colors blue and yellowthe same from Boca, his old rival from that unforgettable Libertadores.

“The training shirts of the players, goalkeepers and coaching staff were named Bombonera, which tell in colors and details of the event that marked the history of Brazilian football”summarizes Paysandú in his official post on social networks.

This initiative, which recalls the feat of two decades ago, did not have a positive impact on the majority of the fans, since the original colors of the 108-year-old institution were changed. The classic light blue and white shirt was replaced by blue and yellowtaking the design of another club.

One of the supporters of the Brazilian team protested on the networks and proposed another recognition: “Pelé just died and they could have thought something related to that, but… Did you find it more interesting to pay homage to the executioner of the team in the Libertadores? Who comes up with these ideas? And the team doesn’t have money to paint the back of the jerseys?

Despite the negative comments from the fans, it is impossible to forget that triumph in the mythical setting of a team that he was never champion of the highest category of Brazil and who was able to access that Copa Libertadores in 2003 for having established himself in the Champions Cup that brought together the winners of regional tournaments. In fact, a year later, Boca ended up hiring Iarleythe player who scored the goal at La Bombonera.
