During the night of Wednesday, two drones exploded at the Senate Palace in the Kremlin.

According to Samuel Bendett, associate professor at the Center for a new American security, it is “technically possible” for Ukraine to carry out such an attack.

– Their newly developed UJ-22 drone can fly these routes, he tells Reuters.

– That drone can fly hundreds of kilometers and has been used in previous attacks.

During the winter, several drone attacks have been directed at targets inside Russia. Ukraine has consistently denied responsibility for the attacks.

There is a third option

Other observers believe that the Kremlin has staged the event to justify a harsh response against Kiev. According to the American think tank ISW, the aim may also have been to arouse fear and support for the war in the domestic population.

Samuel Bendett also mentions a third option – neither Kiev nor the Kremlin need be behind the attack.

– It could have been an operation by non-military actors, someone who is anti-Russian but not necessarily acting on the orders of the Ukrainian government, he says.

The drone passed close to an anti-aircraft position without being shot down – see more in the video.
