Maybe something went wrong yesterday on Charles III’s coronation day. – but his wife is now queen too. Her dress captivated with meaningful details.

It’s official: Camilla is queen. After the coronation of the 75-year-old following the enthronement of her husband King Charles III. there is now also a digital detail that gives the former “king’s wife” a new title. A change has been made to the royal family’s website after the coronation. There is no longer a “Consort” in Camilla’s biography. She is now officially Queen Camilla.

The wish of her predecessor has thus been fulfilled. In February 2022, Queen Elizabeth II personally announced that Camilla should bear the title “Queen Consort” when Charles eventually succeeds to the throne. This title had long been questioned. When Camilla married then-Prince Charles in 2005, it was said that she would be referred to as the “Princess Consort”. However, the Queen’s blessing was already a hint that Camilla would also be crowned alongside her husband – and now the change is official.

The time for criticism seems to be over

With that, the time when Camilla was vilified as an “evil stepmother” and “mistress” is almost forgotten. After all, she is said to have started an affair with the then prince shortly after the wedding of Charles and Diana. The relationship finally became public in 1992 when secretly taped phone calls between Charles and Camilla were leaked to the press.

The couple was heavily criticized, Diana’s accidental death in 1997 did not bring the discussions to a standstill, only after the wedding of today’s royal couple in 2005 did the mood calm down a bit – until just now hardly anyone remembered the restless nineties.

A Bruce Oldfield dress

With all the history and Camilla’s personal story, it was not surprising that Camilla would also celebrate her special day with an unmistakable look. She chose a white silk dress by designer Bruce Oldfield in a simple fitted silhouette.

The embroidery on the dress was chosen to represent the King and Queen’s love for nature and the British countryside. Wildflowers from fields and hedgerows, daisies, forget-me-nots, celandine and scarlet borage adorn the dress.

Also recognizable is a series of festive flag embroideries woven throughout, while the cuffs of each sleeve are also embroidered with the floral emblems of the four nations of the United Kingdom: a rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.

Children get a special place

Another gold embroidery on Camilla’s ivory dress is a tribute to six of the Queen’s special attendants. Woven in are pictures of their two dogs, Bluebell and Beth, as well as the names of their son Tom, daughter Laura, and grandchildren Gus and Lola.

Camilla’s jewelery is also designed as a kind of homage. She wore a Queen Victoria necklace consisting of 25 brilliants with a diamond pendant known as the Lahore diamond. A necklace that Queen Elizabeth II also wore at her coronation in 1953. Camilla’s earrings also once belonged to Queen Victoria, and the Queen Mother Queen Elizabeth wore them in 1937, among others.
