The increase to $9.50 of the minimum wage in Puerto Rico enters into force

As of this Saturday, July 1, the minimum wage will be $9.50, as established in Law Number 47-2021, also known as the “Minimum Wage Law.”

The law – which was approved in 2021 – established the following increases:

  • $8.50 on January 1, 2022
  • $9.50 on July 1, 2023
  • $10.50 on July 1, 2024, unless the Minimum Wage Evaluating Commission, attached to the Department of Labor, issues a mandatory decree varying the same.

The increase stipulated by Law Number 47-2021 applies to all workers covered under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Law, except agricultural, municipal, federal government, Executive, Legislative and Judicial employees, as well as certain administrators, executives and professionals from the private sector.

On June 20, the Secretary of the Department of Labor and Human Resources, Gabriel Maldonado González, urged businessmen in the private sector to comply with the new regulations.

“Private businessmen must make the necessary adjustments to guarantee that from that date the law is complied with. At the Department of Labor and Human Resources we are available to advise workers who consider that their employers do not comply with the new rate,” added the secretary.
