Even before the broadcast of the first episode of The Last of Us series, the path is already set for the second season.
On January 16, subscribers to the HBO Max service will finally be able to discover the first season of The Last of Us adaptation by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann, author of the video game saga. A date that still only concerns Americans since in France, the platform is not available. If the hallway noises suggest a possible availability on Amazon Prime Video, nothing is certain yet. Either way, the series is ready to come out of the oven and deliver its narrative based on the entirety of the first game and more; we know that it will add new scenes so as to expand the beloved universe of Naughty Dog. Spectators will be entitled to 10 episodes which will begin with a 90-minute introduction, the average standard length of a film.
And if for the time being, HBO has not announced new seasons to come, Mazin already knows in which direction he would like to go. In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter in which the team also dropped some information about the canceled The Last of Us movie, Mazin explains that a possible season 2 would directly adapt the sequel to the game, The Last of Us Part 2. A decision which may seem natural, but which rules out the hypothesis that the showrunners could explore the epics experienced by Ellie and Joel during the years which separate the two parts. And sinceThe Last of Us Part II. presents us with characters visibly aged and marked by life, the question now is to know when this potential sequel could be shot.
Confidences about the character of Ellie
This is not the only confidence that the team of the series made to the journalists of The Hollywood Reporter. Neil Druckmann himself notably mentioned the difficulty of embodying the character of Ellie; he says he first spoke with a few dozen candidates before making his choice. Several prerequisites were necessary: Their Ellie had to be “tough, vulnerable and wise beyond his age and also have the potential for violence“. A description that would therefore correspond very well to Bella Ramsey, a revelation in the Game of Thrones series which is however widely criticized by the public. Remember that she will give the reply to Pedro Pascal, actor of Joel, Gabriel Luna in the role of Tommy, Anna Torv in that Tess, but also Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, the actors of capture and dubbing of the games.
