Speaking with Variety, Nicolas Cage revealed that he still enjoys a specific scene from The Legend of the Lost Treasure.
In the scene, your character says: “I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence.”
The actor admits that he can’t say it without laughing.
How do you take something that is so profoundly ridiculous and actually try to convince? What I really like about that scene, just seeing it again for the first time in many years, is that I like the positivity of the character. He really reveres that. I find that charming.”
I can’t even say that without laughing. It’s become a meme so many times. He even went to Saturday Night Live. But you can’t help but laugh! I think what makes it work is how Justin (Bartha) and I are taking it seriously. If you do it for laughs, then it’s crazy comedy, stupid and not my cup of tea. Not my style. The fact that we played it like dramatic actors makes it even funnier than it could have been if it had been slapstick. I think Jon Turteltaub filmed it with love. He made the characters look as if they had great reverence and regard for a sacred object. It’s so ridiculous that you just can’t help but love it. Good to see that scene again.”
