That the man with the hat, Dave Filoni, is one of those who steers the ship regarding the future of Star Wars has probably not escaped anyone who devours what a galaxy far, far away gives us. After working with George Lucas on The Clone Wars, he has now stepped up to be behind much of what was created, and to come. During Star Wars Celebration, it was revealed, among other things, that he will direct one of the upcoming feature films and he has now shared his thoughts on, among other things, the eternal debate about what is and is not canon. (What is officially considered in-universe and not, something that has become a hot potato since Disney took over).

“People get into all these debates of what’s canon and what’s not, and sometimes forget the special nature of telling a good story and creating great characters.

Part of the fan debate in the past always used to be, “What’s canon? What’s not?” because there was George, and we always knew George was the canon. I look at it very broadly, and I just say there’s a love of Star Wars. Because I knew George, I worked with him, and none of us are going to be him. But we love the Galaxy he created, and we’re very much a product of it; growing up with it.”

With the live action series, much of what Disney first called Star Wars Legends (and which was then officially non-canon) has instead become official. Next now with, for example, Grand Admiral Thrawn, who will have a central part in the upcoming Ashoka series.

Lars Mikkelsen will play Thrawn in Avatar, sorry, Ashoka
