The number of deaths in the Military Service sets off the alarms of mothers in Cuba

At least 31 young Cubans have died or been killed in military service in recent years. Their stories are moving and are part of a database compiled by the independent press.

Before Jonathan Fernández took the rifle and shot himself between the eyes, he asked other recruits to shoot him in exchange for 2,000 pesos that he had saved. Since no one took him seriously, around 10:30 p.m. on July 29, 2022, he shot himself. This is how Claudia Padrón Cueto, an independent journalist, begins one of her reports on deaths in military service.

Padrón has created a database that shows how the Cuban regime recruits minors for its army, often with fatal consequences.

At least 31 victims have been included in this database that continues to be enriched by the contributions of friends and relatives of young people who died in military service. Some of the testimonials are moving.

The regime recently toughened the penalties for those who are injured or do not object to military service.

From the island, some mothers have stood up.
