Two tons of cocaine with an estimated market value of more than 400 million euros have been seized by the Italian police in the sea off the east coast of Sicily.

The drugs were in about 70 floating packages, which were fitted with a flashing signaling device and held together by nets. The drugs were packaged in such a way that seawater could not penetrate and the packages could not sink.

Police said today it was a cargo of drugs abandoned at sea by cargo ships that should have been recovered and transported to the mainland. The packages of drugs together weighed almost two tons. It is one of the largest drug finds in Italy.
