The number of fatalities so far se computed after the earthquake that devastated areas of Turkey and Syria rose to 35,224, according to the latest official figures. While the rescuers continue to carry out rescue maneuvers from among the rubble despite the fact that a week has passed since the earthquake.

Although it is increasingly difficult, people are still alive among the mountains of rubble from cities that were destroyed after the magnitude 7.8 tremor on February 6, reported the AFP agency.

According to the official balance, the death toll in Turkey amounts to 31,643 and in Syria to 3,581, making this cataclysm the fifth deadliest since the beginning of the 21st century.

For its part, the UN denounced the failure to send aid to Syria. While around 32,000 people from local organizations are working in search and rescue efforts alongside 8,294 rescuers from abroad, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said.

At the same time, a brigade with 32 Argentine troops, from the Argentine Federal Police and the White Helmets, which depends on the Foreign Ministry, traveled to Turkey to join the search and rescue work.
