The theater association “D’Luschnouar Bühne” presents the comedy “Ab in den Container” for its 40th anniversary.

Lustenau “165,000 tons of expired food from private households end up in the residual waste in Austria every year. That’s around a billion euros that are just thrown away. The hotel industry is not even included,” said Martin Holzer, chairman of the Luschnouar stage at the premiere of the play “Ab in den Container” on Saturday evening in Theresienheim. With the play, the actors want to shake people up and point out the current problem of food waste. The comedy in two acts was edited by club member Veronika Hofer and translated into the Lustenau dialect with the title “A gfondos Freässo!”. The premiere and the other eight performance dates were almost sold out within a very short time. Now three more additional performances are offered.

Current problem packed with humor

“I have to live off what others throw away,” said actor Otto von Treyspitz, explaining why he was looking for something to eat in the container behind the supermarket. “My pension is not enough for shopping in the store.” The piece “A gfondos Freässo” skilfully deals with the contradictions of our consumer society in a humorous, sometimes satirical way.

It’s evening, an hour before closing time. As every evening, fruit, vegetables and food with an expired best-before date are disposed of in a container in the backyard of the grocery store. The supermarket employees do not know that the well-stocked container has long been a meeting place for the needy. Otto von Treyspitz, an impoverished nobleman, and the homeless Charly are adept at “containers”. But the container also becomes a treasure trove for Colette, the nun and street worker, and her two protégés Felicitas and Pascal. But store manager Andreas Groß has his own plans for what to do with the food. And so, that evening, there is an unforeseen encounter in the container.

“In addition to our 40th anniversary, we are also celebrating a very special premiere today, because for the first time we are offering you a premiere buffet. This is not a conventional buffet, but was prepared exclusively with food that would have been thrown away,” says Holzer. The groceries were made available by the “Tischlein deck dich” association, which has set itself the task of distributing flawless food to people in need instead of destroying it. The actors served, among other things, roast beef appetizers, cheese salad, small toasts, pasta salad, salami pizza and delicious desserts. The tables were richly set for the many guests who had appeared. All proceeds from the premiere were donated to the Tischlein deck dich association. bv
