The MTA says it is moving forward in its effort with police to crack down on ghost cars that evade tolls.

Officers stopped 66 vehicles last week.

These vehicles collectively had more than $700,000 in unpaid tolls and fees on the Verrazzano and George Washington Bridges, as well as the Lincoln Tunnel.

Apparently, the main offender among these drivers owes $200,000 in unpaid tolls alone.

To address the problem of toll evasion, the MTA is working with the New York Police Department to pursue what they call “ghost vehicles,” meaning unregistered, uninsured or stolen cars.

Police arrested 14 drivers, issued more than 400 citations and removed more than 100 fake or covered license plates.

Back in the summer of last year, Acting MTA Bridges and Tunnels Chair Catherine Sheridan said: “Toll evasion on MTA Bridges and Tunnels will not be tolerated and if motorists try to evade paying their tolls “they risk having their vehicle interdicted.”

He added: “Our Bridges and Tunnels officers and other B&T agency departments, who support these enforcement operations, are dedicated to ensuring that all vehicles that pass through our facilities are paying their fair share.”
