The Pope condemns human trafficking, "a crime that turns people into merchandise"

VATICAN CITY.- Pope Francis today harshly condemned human trafficking, which he said “It is a crime that turns people into merchandise”during a message after the Sunday Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square.

Francis recalled that today is the day against trafficking in human beings promoted by the United Nations and he bore this “crime that turns people into commodities” and it is “a terrible reality that affects too many people, children and women.”

“There are so many people exploited. All living in inhumane conditions, suffering indifference, discarding by society. There is so much trafficking in the world today. God bless those who strive to fight trafficking.”he added in his message.

On this day, the UN also called on governments, security forces and civil society to strengthen prevention, identification and support for victims. The UN warns that global crises, armed conflicts and the climate emergency are increasing the risk of trafficking.
