The PP will support democratic transition in Cuba

The president of the Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, promised firm support for a democratic transition in Cubaif he wins the elections on July 23 in Spain.

Feijóo published an extensive document in which he detailed the program of an eventual PP government, which places Latin America as a renewed priority of Spanish foreign policy.

“Ibero-America is one of the fundamental areas in our foreign action, a region with which we are linked by deep historical, cultural, political, economic and social ties. Spain must play a more active role in a continent that is undergoing a profound transformation and in which, along with undoubted opportunities, challenges such as new forms of populism have appeared and in which Russia is increasing its influence”, said the center-right leader.

“Spain must firmly support the defense of human rights and the transition to democracy in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Along with this, we must be the bridge with the European Union with initiatives such as the signing of the Free Trade Agreement with Mercosur. In addition, we must continue promoting the system of Ibero-American Summits, which is the main mechanism of political, economic and social cooperation that we have endowed ourselves with and that we hope will play a more active role in facing the challenges of the region”, added Feijóo.

According to the PP program, “freedom, democracy and respect for human rights are at the base of the Ibero-American Community of Nations.”

“We will defend these values in the region and we will give firm support to the democratic forces, especially, at this time, in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua,” he added.

Likewise, he promised a reform to the so-called Grandchildren Law, which grants nationality to many descendants of Spaniards throughout the world.

The document does not specify what this reform that the PP proposes to the Democratic Memory Law, the real name of the legislation, consists of.

More than 150,000 Cubans residing on the island are registered as voters to vote in the next general elections in Spain.

With 152,791 voters, Cuba has the fourth largest number of citizens who can vote in the elections in Spain.

The number of “Cubañoles” exceeds that of many provinces of the European nation, such as Soria, which has 75,749 voters.
