The story of how a classic of the Binomio de Oro was written 'out of eagerness'

The album was one of the most successful of the Binomio de Oro career, with well-known songs such as ‘Get cool’, ‘Pretty girl’, ‘The testament’ and ‘The cry of a king’. The latter is by Maestre, one of the most renowned Vallenato composers.

And Maestre recently told the Portal Vallenato that he composed ‘El llanto de un rey’ in record time and at a not very good time in his life, because his relationship with his wife was not going through its best moment.

He had to run, because the Binomio was finishing recording the album in Barranquilla and was leaving for a tour. The composer said that Rafael Orozco called him worried, he wanted to know if the song would finally be there.

Maestre said yes, although it did not have “not a single syllable”. And he added that he opened the Bible, to relax a little. “I read the Bible and I come across the Star of David and all those things that I wanted to say to her (his wife) so that when I was composing she wouldn’t bother me so much, that I don’t like fights and that when I’m in a relationship I am happy… I compose the first stanza because I had already promised Rafa that I was going to send him the song, and at 4 in the morning I compose the second, that was a record. I went to Barranquilla and recorded it on a cassette” which he gave to Orozco.
