To avoid being filmed in demonstrations, some French people use umbrellas. An object that had already proven itself in Hong Kong.

Even if the sky in Lyon was rather clear on this Monday, May 1, the demonstrators were quick to wave their umbrellas above their heads. And it was not a preventive measure against possible rain but a technique of concealment from the drones which flew over the demonstration in Lyon.

Several videos on social networks show Lyon demonstrators marching equipped with umbrellas. This technique follows the implementation of a decree of the internal security law allowing the police to deploy these flying objects equipped with cameras during gatherings.

Suppression des images possible

This use of drones is applied in order to ensure “the safety of gatherings of people on the public highway when these are likely to cause serious disturbances to public order”, according to the decree.

In fact, no objection can be made to the capture of these images by law enforcement drones. But as Tech&Co explained to you, you can apply your right of access and deletion to the images captured, by making a request to the police headquarters. It should be noted that the images captured by the drones flying over the demonstrations are only kept for one week, and deleted after this period.

However, this umbrella technique is not a first in manifestation. In 2019, the people of Hong Kong started this trend with an “Umbrella Revolution”. The glitches used mainly made it possible to protect themselves from tear gas from the police and projectiles. The method had thus been replicated in other countries, such as in Thailand but also in France, in particular during demonstrations against the pension reform in 2020 to hide the degradations.
