The US calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

MADRID, 8 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller called on Monday for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, whose control the Georgian government lost after the 2008 Russo-Georgian war.

“Russia should withdraw and stop occupying Georgian territory. We will continue to make clear our support for this policy,” Miller said at a press conference.

“The sanctions (…) have hurt the Russian economy. They have targeted critical sectors within Russia,” added the spokesman, referring to the sanctions imposed for the invasion of Ukraine.

For its part, the European Union reaffirmed this Monday its support for the independence and territorial integrity of Georgia 15 years after the war with Russia in 2008, which continues to maintain a military presence in the aforementioned regions.
