“We are extremely disappointed by today’s verdict,” Castro said after hearing the jury’s decision.
“The government was forced to settle for a case built on the backs of some of the most notorious and ruthless criminals to testify in this court. The US had no hard evidence to corroborate its witnesses.”
César de Castro portrayed García Luna as a hard-working family man and said his accusers had “incredible reasons to lie.”
At the trial, drug traffickers Sergio Villarreal Barragán, “El Grande”; Jesus Reynaldo Zambada Garcia, “King Zambada”; and Orlando Nava Valencia, “El Lobo”, claimed to have delivered or witnessed the payment of millions of dollars to the former police chief in exchange for protection.
