US widens sanctions on linked to irregular migration to Nicaragua

WASHINGTON.- USA announced a series of measures against Nicaragua, accusing her of profiting from migration and warning airlines not to be complicit in this situation. The administration of Joe Biden seeks to address the migration crisis from various perspectives, and Nicaragua is at the center of this attention.

With Managua as a disembarkation point for many migrants who then continue their journey north by land, the United States government issued an alert aimed at airlines, charter flight operators, travel agents and service providers. The aim is to highlight how migrant smuggling networks are taking advantage of transport services to facilitate irregular migration and exploit migrants for economic purposes.

In a statement, the State Department singled out dictator Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, for implementing permissive immigration policies that allow this exploitation of migrants and encourage dangerous trips to the southwest border of the United States with Mexico.

To avoid being complicit, a series of measures have been recommended to airlines, such as monitoring high-risk routes, reporting suspicious travel agencies and exercising caution in transactions with opaque intermediaries.

In addition to these actions against migration, the United States expanded sanctions against Nicaragua. This includes sanctions on companies in the gold sector affiliated with the Nicaraguan regime, as well as the Russian Interior Ministry Training Center in Managua, accused of contributing to oppression in the country.

In parallel, visa restrictions were imposed on more than 250 members of the Ortega regime, as well as non-governmental actors who support it. These measures reflect the ongoing tension between the United States and Nicaragua, exacerbated since the 2021 elections, which were criticized for a lack of real competition due to the arrest of political rivals and the intensification of repression in the country.
