The US sanctions thirteen new companies and people related to the repression in Belarus

MADRID, 9 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Department of the Treasury has announced this Wednesday new sanctions against thirteen people –between legal and physical– for their alleged participation in the repression of Belarusian civil society, especially after the August 2020 elections, as well as in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Among the companies pointed out on this occasion by Washington is the Belarusian state airline Belavia, the Belarusian Department of Financial Investigations, the metallurgical company BSW, one of the five largest state companies in the country, as well as the businessman, close to Lukashenko, Aliaksei Aleksin .

The actions have been announced on the occasion of the third anniversary of that controversial electoral victory, with which Lukashenko, after obtaining more than 80 percent of the votes, revalidated his mandate for the sixth time.

The Undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, has highlighted that the entities and individuals that have been placed under these sanctions are “key companies and personalities” of the “Lukashenko regime”, from which they obtain “substantial benefits” for supporting his “repressive policies”.

Under these new sanctions, the indicated persons are prohibited from entering the United States and, if they have them, their bank accounts are frozen, a measure that also applies to companies. Likewise, they will not be able to trade with US companies and citizens.
