Mini-series in four episodes related to the series started in 2019, The Witcher Blood Origin takes place 1200 years before the adventures of Geralt de Riv and his associates. The idea is to recount the events that led to the Conjunction of the Spheresa phenomenon that opened a gap between dimensions, but also develop the history of the elves, and to stage the birth of the first witcher. Supervised by Lauren Schmidt-Hisrich, showrunner on the Netflix saga, and Declan de Barra, writer for season 1 episode 4 and main series season 2 episode 1, The Witcher Blood Origin is directed by Vicky Jewson and Sarah O’Gorman and written by Tania Lotia (Carnival Row), Alex Meenehan (Moon Knight), Aaron-Stewart Ahn (Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities) and Kiersten Van Horne (Snowpiercer). On the casting side, it’s just as solid, with Michelle Yeoh, Nathaniel Curtis, Lenny Henry, Dylan MoranJacob Collins-Levy or Zach Wyatt and Sophia Brown.

All the ingredients therefore seemed to come together to offer an at least sympathetic spin-off, but the series is becoming a true critical failure for Netflix. If it enjoys some positive reviews, especially about the intensity of the fightingsome characters and some panoramas, the series is judged “deeply messy and unappealing that casts doubt on the potential of The Witcher universe in a post-Cavill era” by Polygon, and he is criticized for being interested in “some of the less interesting aspects of the universe”.

On Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, the finding is even more severe. On the first aggregator, The Witcher Blood Origin display a lean 47/100while the user rating is only 0.7/10. On Rotten Tomatoes, reviews bring the score at only 33%, when the audience grants only one 10% for 3168 critical. It’s simple, this 10% of the public is simply one of the worst ratings ever received by a Netflix series.

Blood Origin is to The Witcher series what a hastily done DLC pack would be to the Witcher video games (…). Only completionists should attempt.

Despite its storytelling speed and hard-hitting action (thanks to Michelle Yeoh, for lending her influence as well as her presence), “Blood Origin” is just a waste of time.

The series proves too hasty and scattered to penetrate far beyond the surface of its universe and characters.
