Australian police arrested a man on Friday for allegedly selling sensitive information to a foreign intelligence agency.

Australian citizen Alexander C., previously expatriate and recently returned to Australia, is said to have compiled reports for two foreign spies known to him as “Ken” and “Evelyn”, police said.

Accordingly, the two C. offered for information about the “national security measures“ to pay Australia’s money.

The accused had been approached by an alleged think tank representative while he was working abroad, the police said. He therefore arranged for C. to meet the couple known as “Ken” and “Evelyn”.

Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated that “Ken” and “Evelyn” worked for a “foreign intelligence agency and conducted intelligence activities.” Other Australians are also said to have been approached.

Maximum sentence: 15 years in prison

IT and marketing specialist C. was arrested in Sydney on Friday night and appeared briefly via video link at a local court on Saturday morning. The man faces charges of “reckless foreign interference,” which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. He is due to appear in court again on Monday. (AFP)
