Apple’s “Where is?” technology (also called “Find My”) is being built into more and more devices – whether it’s on a bike or in your luggage. The most unusual application to date comes from the USA: The thermal mug specialist Ember – known for its smart beverage containers – is planning to incorporate the iPhone manufacturer’s tracking function into a new model from the Travel Mug series.

As announced at the CES in Las Vegas, the Travel Mug 2+ will be the successor to the current one TravelMug 2, the feature. The hardware is officially announced for the second quarter of 2023. The price is a whopping 200 US dollars, which is not unusual for Ember mugs – even the Travel Mug 2 costs so much for “Wo ist?” so no extra charge is required.

In practice, the Travel Mug 2+ works like any other device with Apple tracking: It appears as an “Item” in the “Where is?” app and gets its position via Bluetooth protocol from surrounding Apple devices that then pass them on in encrypted form. So findability should be pretty good, especially in urban environments like other Find My devices like the AirTags. Tracking is built right into the Travel Mug 2+, so it’s not just an AirTag slot.

In addition to the tracking module, there is also a small sound generator to play a tone if you don’t find the cup immediately. There is also the usual “Where is?” notification if you leave the Travel Mug 2+ anywhere (except for your own household). This “Separation Alert” can be extremely useful.

Otherwise, the Travel Mug 2+ comes with all the functions that its predecessor already had. This includes the ability to determine the temperature (between 50 and 62.5 degrees Celsius) and then to maintain it. However, this only lasts for three hours – outside of the supplied battery charging plate – after that you have to rely on the insulation.

A display and a +/- button are integrated and of course there is a separate app. However, only 355 ml fit into the cup – probably due to the electronics – there are certainly larger (normal) models on the market. The lid is “360 degrees leakproof” as Ember claims. Who though on low carb friendly Bulletproof coffee with MCT oils, must not access: This can namely attack the plastic.
