On 4 January, the Melodi Grand Prix presents 21 artists and bands who will fight to win the big gold final, and thus get the chance to represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest in Great Britain.

NRK has a stated goal of ending up among the top ten most popular contributions in the international final, which they managed last year with Subwoolfer.

Therefore, there has been a lot of excitement about which artists will try to repeat this feat in 2023.

This is how Melodi Grand Prix 2023 will be:

Melody Grand Prix 2023

The finals in Melodi Grand Prix (MGP) are organized as follows:

  • Delfinale 1 is Saturday 14 January in Oslo.
  • Delfinale 2 is Saturday 21 January in Oslo.
  • Delfinale 3 is Saturday 28 January in Oslo.
  • The gold final is on 4 February in Trondheim.

In this year’s edition of MGP, a number of changes have been made, including:

  • Fewer and larger semi-finals, with more songs in each semi-final.
  • There will be no pre-qualified artists and no last chance.
  • The final will return to Trondheim with an international jury.

It is Arian Engebø and Stian “Staysman” Thorbjørnsen who will be the presenters for Melodi Grand Prix 2023.

The winner of the gold final will represent Norway in Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) the same year. The ESC is held in Liverpool in Great Britain.

  • The first ESC semi-final is 9 May.
  • Second semi-final is May 11.
  • The grand final is May 13.

Ukraine was originally supposed to host the world’s biggest music competition, but due to the ongoing war, the BBC and Great Britain stepped in.

Make a comeback

In advance, committed fans abroad have speculated whether familiar faces will reappear – and it is true.

Former MGP winner Ulrikke Brandstorp (27) is participating this year. Despite her previous victory, she has never participated in the ESC since it was canceled in 2020 due to the corona pandemic.

– I feel that I have something unsettled, said Brandstorp during the presentation.

Now she is motivated to get to the top with the song “Honestly”. It is described as her most personal so far and is based on her own experiences. It is about how you want to be there for someone you love, who is going through bad experiences.

She made the song together with Jim Bergsted, Helge Moen, Ben Adams, Joshua Oliver and Christoffer Gunnestad.

Eirik Næss (35) is a songwriter from Larvik.

– Overwhelmed with excitement, said Næss about the upcoming competition.

He plays in several bands, but will now take part in MGP with the song “Wave”.
