Discusión día sin IVA Cámara de Representantes

Do you relive the day without VAT? This is one of the concerns that haunts the House of Representatives after the decisions that took place last Tuesday night.

With a vote of 93 in favor and 34 againstthe project authored by the Democratic Center and which seeks to revive the policy implemented by former president Iván Duque and which was suspended by the current government.

“With three archival proposals that sought to sink the initiative and with the agreement of more than 9 proposals, we managed to approve the project of the 3 days without VAT in plenary session of the Chamber,” said the representative speaker Christian Garces.

According to Garces, “this law will benefit those who have difficulties buying goods such as school supplies, agricultural products, sports products and household appliances, among others.”

Voices against and in favor of the day without VAT

Among the voices against, were those of the representative for the Historical Pact, David Racero, who assured that “the economic inconvenience of this type of project is that in tax matters it can become regressive (…) when you reduce VAT on this type of project, you end up strengthening sectors that do not favor the most vulnerable”.

In November 2022, when it was also intended to revive the day without VAT, President Gustavo Petro spoke out against this initiative, arguing that this it does not separate the sale of national products from imported ones and generates strong damage to the economy.

“If we want to improve the economic situation, we must stop buying imported products if they are produced in Colombia,” the president said on that occasion.

It should be remembered that the Democratic Center’s proposal to revive the day without VAT still has two debates left in the Senate.
