Sports writing, May 6 (EFE) fifth in the F1 World Cup, which takes place on the circuit built around the Hard Rock Stadium in that town; in which the other Red Bull, that of the Mexican Sergio Pérez, marked the third time; and the Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), fourth and twelfth, respectively.
In the best of his 18 laps, Verstappen, who aspires to win a third title in a row, covered the 5,412 of the hot track built around the stadium of the Miami Dolphins -NFL team, the professional American football league- in one minute , 27 seconds and 535 thousandths, 406 less than the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and with an advantage of 51 hundredths over ‘Czech’, second in the World Cup -only six points behind the 93 with which his Dutch teammate leads- and that comes from winning last Sunday in Azerbaijan.
Sainz, who did 27 laps, five more than the driver from Guadalajara (Jalisco), was 590 thousandths off Verstappen’s time and registered fourth on the time table of the last training session; on a circuit that debuted last year, on a recently resurfaced track that gets faster and faster as time goes by; and in which tire management will be key in this Sunday’s race.
Alonso finished the last testing session just over a second behind ‘Mad Max’. The double world champion from Asturias -third in the World Championship, with 60 points- repeated the Florida track 24 times and set the twelfth time: like the previous ones, with the soft compound tyre. In a training session that ended with an ambient temperature of 29 degrees Celsius and 47 on the asphalt and in which the man from Oviedo, in his second youth at the age of 41, had a run off the track, without consequences, going almost to the limit in the seventeenth of the 19 curves.
The Englishman Lando Norris (McLaren) -who set the sixth time trial on Friday and finished penultimate in the test- and the Danish Kevin Magnussen (Haas) -eleventh in the time table- also had a couple of scares, in a training session that had no no major incident.
The qualification, which will order the starting formation of the race this Sunday -scheduled for 57 laps, for 308.3 kilometers-, will be held from four in the afternoon, ten at night in Spanish peninsular time (20 :00 hours GMT).
