Juarez City.- During the 36th ordinary session of the Municipal Advisory Council for the Elderly, the issue of the social impact of negative stereotypes towards the elderly, as well as the correct way to refer to them, was addressed by councilors.

In addition, the following actions were defined to request the Public Transport Office of the State Government to improve the conditions for this sector of the population.

During the presentation of negative stereotypes, Jesús Manuel García Talavera, from the Gerontology program at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (UACJ), explained that “ageism” is a social and cultural problem that refers to discrimination and prejudice against old people. This prejudice can be subtle or explicit, and can have a significant impact on the health and well-being of these people.

He said age-based discrimination can lead to decreased self-esteem, social exclusion and marginalization, which in turn can contribute to depression and anxiety.

García Talavera mentioned that discrimination based on age can also limit access to health care and other services, which can have a negative impact on health.

Additionally, ageism can also have an economic impact on older people, limiting their ability to work and earn enough income to live comfortably.

The professor said that raising public awareness about ageism is an important task of this council to combat discrimination based on age and promote a culture of inclusion and respect for all ages.

Also, during the session led by Lina Portillo Araiza, the Council’s Human Rights Commission submitted a report on the activity of April 12, where a flyer was carried out on public transport to raise awareness among the population about respect for the older adults.

1,200 flyers were delivered in the activity, but it is intended to carry out this exercise again, in addition to seeking a meeting with the authorities in charge of supervising public transport in the city.
