Juarez City.- Around 2,709 children and young people between the ages of 10 and 19 benefited from psycho-emotional care workshops in schools from January to March of this year, a press release reported.

“We are identifying that there are many adolescents with symptoms. We do psychoeducational workshops and we are identifying some adolescents in schools who are interested in becoming mental health brigade members. So, they are being trained in important health issues so that they know how to identify symptoms and where to refer their colleagues,” said Mariana Salcido, coordinator of the Mental Health program.

He explained that psychological screenings are applied in which 921 cases of anxiety, suicidal behavior and depression were detected, as well as autism spectrum disorder, psychosis and cognitive impairment.

He added that within the activities they carry out, patients with emotional problems are identified and adolescents are trained as brigade members for mental well-being because youth groups were the most impacted during the Covid-19 pandemic, who wreaked havoc on the mental health, so he urged the community to remove the stigma about psychological or psychiatric problems.

“We are working in schools, where a screening is done (…) We provide them with tools so that they can be caregivers within their own spaces. Right now we are focused on working with adolescents because we know that they are the most vulnerable. We go to schools, where we have these dynamics”, explained Mariana Salcido.

He said that the support is free, and within the responsibilities is the channeling to health centers for those who require it, where psychological or psychiatric help is provided.
