They demand that Cuba protect the life of an activist detained after posing with the flag

HAVANA- The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued precautionary measures in favor of Cuban activist Aniette González García, who was detained after sharing photos on her social network posing wrapped with her national flag.

The IACHR urged the Cuban regime to guarantee González’s “rights to life, personal integrity and health.”

The Cuban activist spread the images in March 2023, in a campaign to support the artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, also detained by the Cuban dictatorship. A day after the publication, she was arrested and has remained behind bars since then. sentenced in February of this year to three years in prison for alleged “outrage to national symbols.”

The Cuban Observatory for Human Rights raised its case before the IACHR, which determined that The arrest of the Cuban activist is directly related to the forms of repression exercised on the island. González, “was subject to differential treatment for being considered counterrevolutionary and for having demonstrated through the internet,” the organization said.

Regime repression

Among the circumstances that concern the IACHR are the conditions in which the activist was held, in a cell in poor conditions and impediments to rest, poor nutrition and verbal violence, among other abuses. Likewise, she regretted that she does not have access to medical services despite suffering from bleeding.

The Cuban Observatory for Human Rights (OCDH) thanked the IACHR for its concern and demanded that the Cuban regime “immediately release” González.

“Aniette’s detention was arbitrary as it goes against the right to free expression. Her conditions of imprisonment are putting her life at risk,” warned the Cuban Observatory.
