EU.- Several photographs of Emma Coronel, wife of Joaquín ‘el Chapo’ Guzmán, former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, have been widely disseminated on social networks in recent days. The leaked images were taken in the minimum security prison of Carswell (Texas, USA), where the woman has been held since February 2022 for crimes related to international drug trafficking, as confirmed by her lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, to the channel. Coronel appears posing in the three snapshots, dressed in a sports outfit typical of the prison, wearing glasses, a watch and luxury shoes. In addition, she is accompanied by a man whose identity is unknown. The date on which they were taken has not been established, but they are considered to be recent.
Are the photos illegal?
Ron McAndrew, a former prison guard interviewed by the television network, assures that inmates in minimum security prisons can take pictures, and that they usually do so on weekends, during visiting time. According to Carswell jail regulations, “each inmate may have an album with no more than 25 photos.”
However, Carswell is an exclusively women’s venue. In this context, if the individual shown next to Coronel is an inmate and not a visitor, the images are illegal, McAndrew explains.
The 33-year-old beauty queen was also arrested in the US. in February 2021 and in June she pleaded guilty to the crimes of illicit association to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana; money laundering and participation in property transactions belonging to a drug trafficker. In November of the same year, she was sentenced to three years in prison.
