The expert from the pay TV broadcaster Sky and a colleague are involved in a hectic scene after the Miami Grand Prix – and say clearly what they think of it.
For the second time in the long history of Formula 1, the “premier class” made a stop in Florida this weekend – victory in the Miami Grand Prix went to world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull), as in the first race in 2022.
The race weekend was all about the US offensive of Formula 1, which is enjoying increasing popularity in the country (read more about it here) – and also accepts all kinds of show elements. This year’s winning trio from Verstappen, his teammates Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) were to be driven towards the podium in individual, electrically powered mini jeeps – and this is exactly where a curious scene occurred on live TV.
Criticism of the show aspect in the USA
Because Sky presenter Peter Hardenacke and expert Ralf Schumacher were roughly pushed aside by folders and security guards who wanted to make room for the jeeps. “We’ll have to make room now,” said Hardenacke in surprise. Schumacher became clearer about the treatment by the beefy employees: “They’re idiots, so they’re real,” the 47-year-old said angrily, shaking his head while the loud instructions could still be heard in the background.
The hype surrounding the race in the “Sunshine State” is splitting the Formula 1 fan base anyway. This year, before the start of the race, the drivers were called out one by one. Rap legend LL Cool J was hired especially for this, with cheerleaders standing guard. “Absolutely awful,” wrote one Twitter user. “I want to hide behind the couch and die of chills.” Another was bothered by the “unnecessary circus”.
