A unique edition of the Bugatti Chiron was sold for more than 9.7 million euros, the most expensive new car in history at auction. A price, however, far from the records reached by collector cars.

A unique edition of an already very exclusive automobile jewel: inevitably, the price reaches new heights. The Bugatti Chiron “Profile” was sold on Wednesday February 1 at 9,792,500 euros. A record for a new car sold at auction, says RM Sotheby’s. The house organized the sale in Paris, on the sidelines of the Retromobile show which is held until this Sunday.

Many potential buyers have bid, said RM Sotheby’s in a press release, with collectors present in the room and others by phone or online. The amount thus greatly exceeds the preliminary estimate of the model, between 4.2 and 5.5 million euros.

“La Profilée is a one-off, bespoke version of Bugatti’s acclaimed Chiron hyper sports car and the first and only ‘pre-series’ Chiron Profilée produced,” the statement noted.

The last Bugatti with the W16 engine

Bugatti had indeed designed this version “equipped with an exterior shape exclusively for increased downforce and better thermodynamic management of the air flow” and intended to be assembled in several copies. But the Molsheim brand had finally reached the quota of 500 units announced in total for this model faster than expected, which makes this Low Profile a unique version.

“It is also the last Bugatti to be sold with Bugatti’s iconic W16 quad-turbo engine”, underlines the auction house, enough to reach 300 km / h in 12.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed. at 380 km/h.

Far from the most expensive new car in history

If at nearly 9.8 million euros, its price remains exorbitant, the Bugatti Chiron Profiled remains far from the record for the most expensive new car in history. In May 2021, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail would indeed have sold for nearly 20 million pounds (more than 23 million euros), a model produced in three copies. She then exceeded Bugatti’s Black Carestimated at 17 million euros.

The Profiled record is therefore based on the fact that it is the highest historical amount for a new car sold at auction. But in this little game, it’s an opportunity, or rather collectible carswhich can result in even more incredible sums.

In May 2022, a 1955 Mercedes Coupé 300 SLR Uhlenhautproduced in only two copies, sold for 135 million euros at auction, which remains an absolute world record.
